Choosing the Right MetaTrader 5 Broker for Algorithmic Trading

What a broker does, what to check before trusting one with your money, and why I trade with Darwinex.

What Is a Broker and Why You Need One

A trader is someone who trades the financial markets, but individuals can’t access those markets directly. They need a financial intermediary: a broker.

A broker is an authorized and regulated financial entity that sends the trader’s orders to liquidity providers, giving the trader access to the markets. It is also responsible for keeping the trader’s funds safe.

So every trader needs a broker — and, as you’ll see below, it’s not a choice to take lightly.

  1. YouSend the order
  2. BrokerRoutes it and keeps your funds safe
  3. Liquidity providersFill it in the market

How to Choose the Right Broker for MT5 (or Any Platform)

There are so many brokers, with so many offers, that finding the right one can become an odyssey. And the choice is not trivial.

Market makers

If the broker has a dealing desk, it takes the other side of your trades: when you win, it loses. Add a lax offshore regulator and you have a broker that doesn’t play fair.

Fake brokers

Some “brokers” simply take your money and disappear. They are often promoted on social media by fake successful traders showing manufactured reports.

What to check before you open an account

No Dealing Desk

NDD brokers don’t pass your orders through a dealing desk; they send them to the market through liquidity providers.

Regulation

Supervision by a reputable authority such as the FCA or ASIC is what gives you confidence that the broker won’t cheat.

Reputation and presence

Long-established brokers with an international presence are usually still there because they do things right.

Fast execution

Low latency matters, especially for short-term styles: the faster your order reaches the market, the better the price.

Server location

The closer the broker’s servers are to its liquidity providers, the faster your orders reach the market.

Markets on offer

A personal choice: just make sure the broker gives you access to the markets you want to trade.

Trading costs

Short-term traders need low spreads and commissions; long-term traders, low overnight fees and swaps.

Security

Both the security of the broker’s systems and the protection of client funds.

Withdrawals

Avoid brokers that charge silly fees or put obstacles in the way of taking your money out.

Customer service

Support in your language, quick responses and satisfied clients.

The Best MT5 Broker for Algorithmic Trading

Over my career I’ve vetted a good number of brokers, and several meet all the criteria above.

But one stands out — not for its trading conditions, which are competitive and among the best, but for the access it gives to third-party capital: Darwinex. It’s the broker where I do most of my trading, and I recommend it to beginners and experienced traders alike.

Darwinex is a technology company whose core business is asset management infrastructure for traders and investors: traders turn their strategies into an investable asset and expose it to investor capital. To make that possible it also offers brokerage, so you get the full package — market access under good conditions and access to third-party capital under Darwinex’s licences.

Darwinex
  • Regulated by the FCA (UK) and the CNMV (Spain)
  • MetaTrader 4 and MetaTrader 5
  • Access to investor capital through DARWINs

Competitive and in line with the best regulated brokers — and better if you’re a talented trader: Darwinex scores each strategy with its D-Score and discounts your commissions by up to 40% depending on it.

Assets

Forex and CFDs on indices, commodities, US stocks and ETFs.

Platforms

MetaTrader 4 and MetaTrader 5 with hedging position accounting.

Ultra-fast execution

Servers co-located with their liquidity providers to minimise latency.

High liquidity

Liquidity aggregation for fast fills, also in high volatility.

Talent-linked pricing

D-Score from 55 to 60: 20% off commissions. Above 60: 40% off.

Regulation

Regulated by the UK’s FCA and the Spanish CNMV.

Detailed analytics

Valuable data on your strategies: VaR, loss aversion, correlation and more.

It also meets the other criteria: presence and reputation, security, customer support and easy deposits and withdrawals.

Beyond brokerage

Unique Technology to Access Third-Party Capital

Darwinex turns your strategy into an investable index, the DARWIN, and lists it on a trader–investor exchange ranked by metrics such as the D-Score, experience, risk stability, loss aversion, correlation and divergence.

DARWINs are adjusted to a 6.5% VaR

A DARWIN replicates your strategy, but under Darwinex’s risk engine, which adjusts its risk to a 6.5% VaR. That way all DARWINs compete on equal terms and investors are protected: overleveraged strategies don’t lead the rankings, the best return-to-risk ones do.

DarwinIA SILVER

A monthly contest where Darwinex allocates notional capital to the best DARWINs, and you’re paid 15% of the profits on it. Your DARWIN takes part from day one: allocations from €30,000 to €375,000 depending on return/drawdown and ranking, for 3 months, cumulative.

DarwinIA GOLD

Once your DARWIN has proven robust over the medium to long term, it competes in GOLD: up to €500,000 a month depending on last month’s performance, held for 6 months and also cumulative.

Darwinex PRO

Another route: your own brand. Darwinex puts its technology at your disposal so you can approach your own investors with your own fees.

What you get with a DARWIN

Darwinex Wants You to Win

Reliable brokers make money from your commissions and spreads, so they only care about how much volume you trade. That’s true for every broker (leaving aside scams and market makers, which also make money from your capital).

Darwinex charges commissions too, but the core of its business is the fees it charges investors. So it needs two things to succeed: successful traders and investors. Without one or the other the model fails — which means Darwinex wants you to succeed.

Traders

List DARWINs to attract investor capital and receive 15% of the profits they make for investors as a performance fee.

Investors

Look for DARWINs from talented traders to invest in and diversify their portfolio.

Darwinex

Charges investors a 1.2% annual maintenance fee and a 20% performance fee: it keeps 5% and pays 15% to the trader.

That’s also why, according to its risk warning, only 56% of retail accounts lose money trading CFDs with Darwinex — against the 75–85% that other brokers usually report.

The broker I trade with

For talented, experienced traders, Darwinex is the best choice: access to investor capital and lower commissions. And because it offers excellent conditions and its business model needs talented traders, it’s also our first choice for beginners.

Take me to Darwinex

We’ve traded with Darwinex for years, so they gave us an exclusive link for you to register. It earns us a small share of the commissions you pay Darwinex; your commissions don’t go up.

CFDs are complex instruments and come with a high risk of losing money rapidly due to leverage. 56% of retail investor accounts lose money when trading CFDs with this provider. You should consider whether you understand how CFDs work and whether you can afford to take the high risk of losing your money.
